The Organic Pantry is an Award-winning organic farm, nestled in the Wharfe Valley just outside of Tadcaster. St Helen’s Farm has been traditionally farmed by generations of the Watson family. Concerned about preserving the land and wildlife for future generations, in 1999 Jonnie Watson converted the 300-acres of land over to organic and they have not looked back.

Now growing from seed over 40 varieties of vegetable, cereal and salad crops the Organic Pantry is a thriving business supplying homes and businesses throughout the northeast of England.

Not only do they have their own extensive range of veg, they also have a strong network of local organic suppliers so can offer customers the very best of Yorkshire seasonal produce – all ethically grown to organic standards.

The business was started in 1945 by Albert Allum, in Wakefield Market, and has been in the family for three generations.

Meat was rationed to Albert and he was the first to sell heifers (female cattle). He went for quality not quantity.
 
If he had sold bulls (male cattle), it would have enabled him to sell more meat. The concept of quality not quantity was born.

I run the business from our two modern shop premises, ensuring fresh produce for our online butchers.

Product quality is of the utmost importance and to achieve this we engage in solid working practices and solid relationships with our suppliers who produce the type of meat we demand.

Consistent standards are important in the sourcing and manufacturing of our meat as this helps achieve customer satisfaction.

All carcasses are hand prepared on the premises, by our knowledgeable skilled staff, to ensure the product is of the very best quality and taste.

We make good quality, slowly fermented bread using organic flours and locally sourced ingredients. Our range of breads include:

Classic Sourdough

The reason our bakery exists. A loaf raised by wild yeast and made from wheat and rye flour, carefully nurtured over two days. A classic, versatile sourdough with a very mild creamy tang. The long loaf with a cut down the middle.

Seeded Sourdough

The little sister of our classic sourdough. Made with soaked linseed, toasted sesame and toasted sunflower seeds. The seeds keep the loaf moist and add a savoury, nutty flavour. Round loaf with a square cut into it.

Vollkornbrot

A traditional German-style 100% rye sourdough made with wholemeal rye flour, kibbled rye (chopped rye grain), a rye sour and sunflower seeds. Keeps for up to a week and improves as it ages. Distinctive brick shape.

New York Deli Rye

A typical sandwich loaf from New York delis, inspired by Eastern European bread. 35% rye flour with some caraway seed added. A long loaf with diagonal cuts.

Malthouse Sourdough

A delicious blend of three malts (wheat, barley and rye) with wholemeal and white wheat flour. Crusty but with a soft, open, chewy crumb. We would call it Granary but one of the big bread companies trademarked the name. A shorter loaf with diagonal cuts.

We also offer a Weekly Special which includes the likes of Roasted Garlic, Pain de Campagne, Country Rye and Polenta & Sunflower Seed Sourdough.

We are regularly expanding our offering as the bakery grows. Expect to see other European specialities (Polish ryes, French country breads…) and seasonal breads such as baked apple loaf or stollen.

You can buy our bread at local Farmers’ Markets or from one of our stockists, or by taking out a bread subscription.

We usually have some spare loaves available at the bakery, along with various half price frozen loaves which you’re welcome to pop in and buy if you’re passing!

We also do wholesale, if you would like more info about that please get in touch. Our wholesale range includes the above breads as well as many others such as ciabatta, focaccia, and various rolls/burger buns plus our doughnuts! All our breads are slow fermented and made by hand

Our guest stalls in June were The Seasonal Larder with produce from our local hedgrows; Horsforth Pick Your Own Farm with asparagus on our doorstep and East End Nurseries brought those delicious fresh strawberries again. Horsforth Fellandale Club was on The Horsforth Matters Stall.

As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic we have been advised by Leeds City Council that all farmers' markets will be cancelled until further notice. We're really sorry that we aren't able to be open in May but would encourage all our regular customers to check out our regular and guest stallholder pages to consider ways in which you can safely continue to support our traders in these difficult times.
